Renovations We Love: Art Deco Restoration

The latest addition to our Renovations We Love series takes us to the delightful home of Hollie and Joe - @artdecorestoration. Located in South London, the 1930s Art Deco-style house has been on quite the journey since the couple purchased the property back in January 2018. Full of interior delights, from a hidden breakfast nook to a secret bar, their open-plan downstairs beautifully demonstrates the art of liveable sophistication.

The Space

Nestled in the surrounding grounds of Eltham Palace, the house was built in a modern, Art Deco style in 1938.

Although many of the original features were no longer standing, the couple chose to honour the era with subtle references throughout their renovation.

On their favourite space, Joe comments, ‘We just love the downstairs, we have really made it work for us as a family and that’s so important; our daughter can be playing in her part of the room, I can be cooking, whilst my wife is in the living area and we can all still talk and see each other.’

The Kitchen

Features our Digbeth Ridged T-Bar and Cabinet Handle with Backplate size 224mm, both in our antique brass lacquered finish.

The quietly luxurious kitchen is one to add to your mood board if white, bright and airy is your desired style.

Joe shares, ‘We had quite a clear idea of what we wanted in terms of the look of the cabinetry. It’s kind of a double shaker style with a hint of Art Deco. We kept the kitchen white and opted for furniture and decorative items to add a splash of colour.’

The stylish decor throughout the space marries contemporary design with a touch of tradition and in the kitchen, a marble backsplash, herringbone flooring and cupboards and drawers dressed with hardware from our Digbeth collection all work to elevate the look.

The Utility Room

Making one of the most functional rooms a joy to spend time in, Hollie and Joe use laundry essentials to form part of the decor and from the wicker basket to apothecary-style bottles and glass jars filled with pegs, the aesthetic is natural and practical in equal measure.

Awash with natural light from the Crittall windows, the laundry room feels instantly fresh and is kept neat with bespoke cabinets by McClark Joinery. Mirroring the design of those in the kitchen, the stepped edge detail to the doors, cornice and skirting yields an effortless nod to the Art Deco era.

The Breakfast Nook

A modern addition to the kitchen is the breakfast nook.

Sitting adjacent to the island, this kitchen cupboard reveals interior shelving to store all the essentials needed for breakfast - a covetable feature for family living.

Living Room Storage

Family homes can never have too much storage and the bespoke built-in cabinetry in Hollie and Joe’s multi-functional space keeps clutter at bay. To break up a block of cabinets, opt for shelving within the design - the cabinets will frame the display and instantly draw the eye.

The Secret Bar

We adore a home bar - even more so when the bar is a hidden element of the interiors. Complete with lights and a mirrored panel to bring the decadent display to life, this presents an innovative way to optimise space and makes a great conversation piece for guests too.

Hollie and Jo share their renovation tips:

  • Discuss a budget and regularly update this to keep a general track of your spending.
  • Weigh up the value of your own time vs the cost of hiring a professional - it’s important to see that your time is just as important as the monetary value of something in a project like this.
  • Living in a full renovation is stressful at times and nothing can prepare you for the mess and forever falling blanket of dust (regardless of how well you protect it).
  • Sometimes you just need to take a step back and trust in the process. It can feel at times like there are still so many things to tackle and details to work out so make lists with timescales and gradually work through them.
