Renovations We Love: Rachael Somerville

Renovations We Love: Rachael Somerville

The next instalment in our ‘Renovations We Love’ series is located in the idyllic county town of Shrewsbury and belongs to interiors lover Rachael Somerville.

The House

A beautiful Georgian renovation, the 5 bedroomed property shoulders the lush greenery of Rea Brook Nature Reserve, and boasts extensive views of its dramatic surroundings. Full of incredible original features Rachael’s home marries all that is quintessentially British with modern, family - friendly living.

Rachael understood that the responsibility of a whole house Georgian renovation meant nurturing the incredible host of Georgian features, whilst creating a luxe and homely feel. Rachael says, “We really wanted to create a home that was sympathetic to its age but with the practicalities of modern-day living… we have used Armac Martin handles all the way through our home as we feel they marry these two elements together.”

The Kitchen

Incredible Georgian bay windows create the most ethereal light in this delightful kitchen and living space. Rachael has contrasted a neutral warm colour palette on the cabinetry with the striking dark kitchen island. A sense of tradition can still be felt in the warm brass details of the kitchen handles and knobs with Rachael noting: “we opted for the Cotswolds Collection in a burnished brass finish to complement our traditional aged brass taps in the kitchen and utility room.” This open plan kitchen extends into a dining space and snug and opens onto an impressive terrace with awe-inspiring views of the Shropshire countryside.

The Utility

Wood panelling and stone floors create warmth in this functional yet beautiful utility room. Hints of natural wood and wicker evoke feelings of a countryside boot room and the exquisitely made neutral cabinets include an elegant home for the family pooch – a perfect example of the incredible attention to detail that is present throughout this renovation.

The Living Room

Flowing effortlessly from the kitchen and dining area, the open plan family space moves into a modern luxe living room. Echoing the same warm neutral palette with brass accents, the consistent use of hardware makes for a seamless and cohesive finish. Immaculate styling of the beautiful open shelving sees elegant accessories partnered with family photos and hints of nature drawing from the incredible views - all highlighted by the abundance of natural light streaming through the Georgian windows.

The Dressing Room

Deciding on muted neutrals for the colour palette, the dressing room in Rachael’s home really is the walk-in wardrobe of dreams. Sophisticated wardrobes flow faultlessly from the master bedroom, and the sleek linear design makes for a timeless aesthetic. Rachel says, “We opted for a more streamline handle in their satin brass finish for our dressing room and en-suite where we wanted a sleeker look.”

Awash with natural light Rachael’s dressing table is home to the Claremont Dressing Table Mirror, intricately designed by Sophie Paterson. Rachael says, ‘I absolutely love the @armacmartin brand and have their handles throughout my home and I just adore everything that @sophiepatersoninteriors does. Her work is the epitome of luxury and I have huge respect for her as a designer but also as a businesswoman; she’s a true inspiration to a budding interior designer like me!’

The Bathroom

This beautiful bathroom creates a spa-like sanctuary in Rachael’s home- with all of the exquisite detailing you would expect from a luxury hotel bathroom. The marble style floor continues onto the walls for a harmonious, spacious aesthetic, leaving the substantial vanity to take centre stage. The thematic use of sophisticated brass details is seen throughout- from the truly elegant shower trim to the beautiful Claremont Vanity Mirror by Sophie Paterson.

The Playroom

Rachael’s signature chic yet practical style emanates through this stunning playroom where beautiful bespoke joinery by Anthony Lewis provides an elegant focal point. Playroom storage is a blend of style and function. Toys are organised to perfection in the built-in units with baskets and wooden toys introducing natural texture. Bathed by a profusion of natural light thanks to the property’s gorgeous Georgian windows, the use of Worsted’ by Farrow and Ball is elevated by rainbow decals dotted across the feature wall for a subtle but playful feel.
